Backhanded Sweep Pass

Key Points :

- Puck close to body, facing outside skate.
- Movement of hands to front of trunk, puck in front of skate.
- Puck leaves blade of stick close to inside skate.
- Stick follows puck and points to target.
- Stick blade directed towards target.

Common mistake(s)
- Not looking at target.
- Arms not free of body.

Backhanded Sweep Shot

Key Points :

- Push close to body and facing back skate.
- Inside skate (opened outward up and towards target).
- Transfer weight forward; vigorous rotation of trunk; shoulders and arms towards target.
- Sweeping motion of stick, and then whip of wrists.
- Stick follows puck and points to target.

Common mistake(s)
- Not transferring weight to puck.
- Not opening skates up.
- Not looking at target.

Backhanded Wrist Pass

Key Points :

- Puck in middle of blade and on side of body.
- Short movement of hands to front of trunk.
- Puck leaves blade of stick by whipping motion of wrists, in front of inside skate.
- Blade of stick directed towards target.

Common mistake(s)
- Not looking at target.
- Angle of blade in respect to target.
- Arms not free of body.

Backward Crossover

Key Points :

- Basic stance.
- Outside leg always in contact with the ice.
- Push of outside leg creates an imbalance towards the inside.
- Two complete extentions for every crossover.
- Outside knee passes inside knee.

Common mistake(s)
- No rotation of upper body.
- No bending of gliding leg which prevents an extended movement.

Backward Crossover Start

Key Points :

- Basic stance at more or less 90 degrees of desired direction.
- Push of outside leg to create an imbalance; outside knee in front of inside kneeÊ: bring back simultaneously in order to facilitate crossover.
- Series of backward skating.

Common mistake(s)
- No push from inside skate.
- Bent forward too much.
- Head down and not looking in front of oneself.

Backward Skating

Key Points :

- Basic stance.
- Beginning of push under bodyÕs weight.
- Inward rotation of foot, heel towards the outside.
- Complete extension of leg towards the side.
- Quick and complete recovery, drive skate stays on ice.

Common mistake(s)
- Twist (do not split two legs up).
- Incomplete extension.
- Trunk bent too much forward.
- Unnecessary movement of arms.

Backward Start

Key Points :

- Basic stance.
- Slight rotation of shoulders favoring positioning of drive skate.
- Beginning of push under the bodyÕs weight.
- Vigorous extension of hip, of knee and of pushing ankle : - drive skate makes a half-circle - gliding leg is pronouncedly bent.
- Push of other leg before complete recovery of other skate.

Common mistake(s)
- No bending.
- Twist (legs are together).
- Unnecessary body movement.

Backward To Forward Pivot

Key Points :

- Glide on one skate, leg bent.
- Arms brought close to body.
- Open up hips, shoulders parallel to movement of player.
- Pivot free foot, heels facing each other ((180 degrees).
- Transfer weight from gliding skate to free skate, followed by front start.

Common mistake(s)
- Skates crossover.
- Poor grip on stick.

Backward To Forward Turn

Key Points :

- Gliding on bent leg.
- Off-balanced in direction of turn, half-circle made on side.
- Gliding skate perpendicular to desired direction, followed by a forward start.

- Crossover.

Basic Stance And Grip On Stick

Key Points :

- Skates parallel, shoulder width.
- Trunk, knees and ankles bent.
- Stick kept on ice with two hands and blade of stick in front of oneself.
- Hands one forearm length apart.
- Elbows free.
- Head and eyes looking up to see the whole play.

- Trunk bent too much.
- Insufficient knee bend.

Crossover

Key Points :

- Head, shoulders and stick pointing in desired direction.
- Push of outside leg, which creates an imbalance.
- Two complete extensions for every crossover.
- Outside knee in front of inside knee.

- Crossover of skate (younger age).
- Hopping (if on one leg).
- Leaning during turn.
- Not bringing back inside leg sufficiently.

Dribble

Key Points :

- Basic stance.
- Elbows free from body.
- Blade of stick is bent towards puck and slight push (forehand).
- Blade goes over puck, again is bent towards puck (backhand) and then repushes in other direction.
- Movement of stick is a result of rotation of wrists.
- Head up to have global view of play.

Common mistake(s)
- Lateral movement of body.
- No lateral movement of puck, only of stick.
- No rotation of wrists.
- Elbows not free of body.
- Head down and not looking in front of oneself.

Flip Pass

Key Points :

- Puck placed on heel of blade of stick.
- Roll puck from heel to tip of blade by sliding stick from the outside towards oneself, and then towards receiver.

Common mistake(s)
- Not looking at target.
- Puck lifted instead of rolled.
- Arms not free of body.

Flip Shot

Key Points :

- Skates facing target.
- Puck placed diagonally in respect to inside skate.
- Contact of puck made with front part of blade.
- Superior hand rapidly pushes down creating effects of lever with stick, inside hand follows movement.
- Blade outward, follows puck in direction of shot.

Common mistake(s)
- Puck in wrong place at contact.
- Contacts puck with whole blade as opposed to just end of blade.
- No quickness in wrist action.

Forward Skating

Key Points :

- Basic stance.
- Beginning of push under bodyÕs weight.
- Complete extension of leg towards the side.
- Quick and complete recovery, drive skate is as close as can be to ice.

Common mistake(s)
- Incomplete extension.
- No gliding phase.
- Incomplete recovery.
- Lateral movement of arms.

Forward Start

Key Points :

- Basic stance.
- Imbalance towards front, skater is on front third of blade.
- Drive skate is outward.
- First set of strides are short (4 to 5).

- No imbalance.
- Skates outward.
- Head down and not looking in front of oneself.
- Lateral movement of arms, movement is too extended.

Forward To Backward Pivot

- Gliding on one skate, leg bent.

- Body bent forward.
- Rotation of outside skate stopping at 90 degrees in relation to direction of player.

- Body too straight.
- No bending of knees.

One-Time Shot (Close To The Net)

Key Points :

- Bend trunk forward and slightly bring back stick Hands tight on stick.
- Blade brought back forward, always in contact with ice.
- Blade contacts puck in midst of its trajectory.
- Blade follows puck in direction of target.

Common mistake(s)
- Blade poorly positioned in respect to target.
- Hands not tight on stick at moment of contact with puck.
- Poor perceptivo-motor or poor timing in respect to speed and trajectory of puck.

Reception Of Pass With Skates

Key Points :

- Use skate closest to trajectory of puck.
- Blade of skate positioned to allow puck to be directed towards playerÕs stick.
- Stick on the ice, in front of oneself.

Common mistake(s)
- Poor weight transfer, causing an imbalance.
- Problems positioning blade in order to receive and direct puck (motor-perceptivo).

Reception Of Pass With Stick

Key Points :

- Stick on the ice.
- Blade perpendicular to puck and leaning towards it.
- Tightening of hands on stick.

Common mistake(s)
- Bringing stick too far back during reception.
- Poor positioning of blade in respect to trajectory of puck.

Sharp Turn

Key Points :

- Stick held with two hands and placed in front of oneself at beginning of turn.
- Head and shoulders turned towards desired direction.
- Body leans inward, weight distributed on two blades, inside skate in front of outside skate.
- For turn made on side of superior hand, hand is placed on side of hip during turn.
- The tighter the turn, the more the weight is placed on back of blades.
- Crossover followed by a forward start.

Side Start

Key Points :

- Basic stance is perpendicular to desired direction.
- Extension of outside leg in order to create an imbalance.

- Rotation of head and shoulders leading to an opening up of the hips.
- Forward start.

- Inside skate glides backwards.
- No push from inside skate.
- Head down and not looking in front of oneself.

Slap Shot

Key Points :

- Skates placed sideways in respect to target.
- Puck placed between legs and close to body.
- Swing begins with bringing stick back, parallel to position of skates.
- Transfer oneÕs weight from back leg to front leg as soon as stick comes down, it points to ice; top half of body bent over puck.
- Tighten hands on stick as its blade hits ice slightly behind the puck.
- Blade of stick follows through, pointing towards target.
